Google Advertising: How Does It Compare With Other Platforms?
The social media takeover has been going on for over a decade, but within the past few years, it has made strides into other fields such as commerce (Facebook Marketplace) and even news (Twitter live streaming via Periscope). Even with these strides, social media’s advertising presence has been by far the most impactful. But how does it compare with Google advertising? In today’s JumpSIX Marketing post, we will take a look.
How Do Google Ads Work?
The biggest benefit of social media ad campaigns compared to Google advertising is the ease with which they can be set up and tracked. The process to begin an ad campaign in AdWords is more complex than with Facebook or YouTube advertising, and setting it up incorrectly can be costly.
The first step in a Google advertising campaign is keyword and audience research. AdWords provides tools to do this, but if you are setting up an AdWords campaign, you should still be:
- Speaking to customers
- Brainstorming with your team
- Scoping out the competition
AdWords can help with these things, but there is still legwork required. After your research, you will pick a set of keywords, create your ads, categorize your ads via keywords, and then begin bidding.
How Does Social Media Marketing Work?
The set up for social media advertising is simpler than that of Google advertising. We’ll use Facebook as our example for this exercise. Let’s say you run a business. That business has a Facebook page. As the business owner, you are the admin of the Facebook page. To begin advertising, you need a business manager account.
From there it’s pretty easy. You pay to have your ads circulated onto the feeds of users in your targeted areas based on location, demographics, and unique profile information. One downside to social media advertising is that failing to set it up correctly (i.e., proper target areas, demographics, etc.) will be costly like AdWords, but you have less control over the setup. With that being said, these campaigns are easy to track but can also be broader in their targeting, especially for small businesses.
Is Google Advertising Worth It?
AdWords may be more complicated than social media marketing, but you have more control over the process. And while social media marketing is very trendy and also very viable, it still doesn’t get the number of clicks that AdWords does. Google advertising, while being more complicated and a little more expensive, leads to better conversion rates.
